British beef farmers are urging urgent action to restore sustainable income, as statistics show that markets are at a three-year low.
The lack of competition between British beef processors discourages any difference between purchase prices and limitation of options for processors.
The share of manufacturers in the retail price is currently below 48%, which is much lower than the historical average, and manufacturers feel that they are short of their products.
There is a danger that without urgent action in the supply chain and government, according to the National Farmers Union (NFU), in the coming weeks, "the bad situation will quickly worsen."
Vice President Stuart Roberts said the beef sector and the government must work together to find solutions to this "emerging crisis."
“There is real concern that more than 70% of cattle are processed by five or six companies that supply 10 retailers, the lack of competition allows value to be removed from the market.
We ask farmers to receive a fair and sustainable share of retail value, which is currently not the case, ”said Vice President of the National Union of Farmers of Great Britain.
