More than 75 tons of tomatoes directly from Morocco were not allowed to the Russian trading floors by the scrupulous employees of the Rosselkhoznadzor at the checkpoint “Big Port of St. Petersburg”.
A huge tomato batch went for a thorough inspection, and it turned out that, together with the tomatoes, Moroccan suppliers tried to introduce not only juicy tomatoes to Russia, but also the larvae of the South American moth, dangerous for farmers all over the world. Fruits stuffed from such larvae were seized and banned for import into the Russian Federation.
Note that the South American tomato moth T. absoluta is extremely dangerous for fruits and yields. The larva of this insect penetrates the leaves, stems and fruits of tomatoes and destroys them. Crop losses can be 50-100%, if you do not fight this pest.
Tomatoes "stuffed" with the larvae of a dangerous pest went back to Morocco.
