The cost of food and non-alcoholic drinks in the Khmelnitsky region as of January jumped 1.6%. About the same price increase is observed here every month.
More recently, potatoes, carrots and onions were cheap. This winter, potatoes in supermarkets cost up to 15 UAH / kg. Thus, the cost of potatoes has become quite tangible. A rise in price of 16.5% affected all vegetables. For two medium heads of cabbage it was necessary to give 50 UAH, for a kilogram of beets or carrots - 15-19 UAH.
All records were broken by onions, which rose in price to 22 UAH / kg and became “golden” from onion. By tradition, everything could be explained by a poor harvest. Summer was not the best for onions. But there was no mass crop. In 2018, almost 184 thousand tons of open field vegetables were harvested in the Khmelnitsky region. This is 11.5% less than in 2017, but could not lead to such an increase in prices for vegetables. What made up the high price of onions is unclear. There was no potato crop failure in Khmelnitsky region in 2018 either. 1 million 386 thousand tons - this is the number of root crops collected by farms of all categories, according to the Department of Agricultural Development. This is 0.5% more than in 2017. Despite this, the price of potatoes still increased. Even in the most lean years, Khmelnitsky people do not remember that potatoes cost up to 15 UAH / kg in winter. A kilogram of potatoes almost caught up with the cost of bread, but this has never happened before.
