In the United States, USDA and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have entered into a joint venture agreement on cell-based meat.
According to the agreement, the USDA will supervise the production and processing of “artificial meat”, as well as labeling products from such meat, while the FDA will oversee the scientific development of the product.
Despite the widespread farmer protest against “artificial meat”, in the USA this decision was generally adopted positively. In a joint document, US government officials said that they would develop the necessary detailed regulatory framework, as well as determine the need for legislative or regulatory changes. It is also reported that the parties will develop joint rules for labeling products and making claims in order to guarantee the consistency and transparency of the labeling of “artificial meat”.
Proponents of the new food product argue that such meat is much less resource-intensive than conventional, but at the same time, no one can answer the question today how equivalent “artificial meat” is to ordinary, from cattle.
In the meantime, meat on a cell basis in no country in the world has received permission to sell.
