Sowing winter wheat this season is quite slow due to drought, lack of moisture and lack of rainfall. However, precipitation up to 6-7 mm., Which fell this week, contributed to the acceleration of wheat sowing in the Sumy region.
Dry land, as well as the absence of precipitation for more than 1.5 months and almost zero supply of productive moisture in the arable layer of the soil delays sowing of winter wheat throughout Ukraine. It is impossible to cultivate the soil, to make mineral fertilizers, to sow.
“According to the plan, during this period we should already add anhydrous ammonia and sow wheat, but it makes no sense to fertilize such dry land, so I had to adjust the plans a bit and wait for at least some rainfall.
Finally we waited - on September 20-21 we had about 6-7 mm. the rain. Of course, they will not improve drastically the situation with moisture, but this is at least some moisture for our fields. Therefore, they intensified their activity with sowing, ”notes Anton Basanets, an agronomist of private farming in Sumy region.
According to weather forecasts, Sumy farmers can wait for more rains in the coming days, so the sowing is slowly gaining momentum. But, as agricultural producers say, the first frosts are expected in the coming days.
