In Pakistan, the export of onions and peppers was banned until May 31, 2020. The government imposed a ban that lasts until May 30, 2020.
Punjab requested the ban on the export of onions and red pepper from Pakistan to the office of the Prime Minister. The leadership of the Indian state is afraid of rising vegetable prices due to a likely shortage of the product. In addition to India, Pakistani onions are mainly exported to Germany, the Middle East, Sri Lanka. In terms of onion exports, Pakistan ranks 5th in the world.
It is noted that the ban takes effect immediately. According to the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the decision to impose a ban was made by a cabinet committee on February 19 at a meeting of the Economic Coordinating Committee (EKK).
Fruits and vegetables exporters said the government’s decision would result in losses of millions of dollars. Wahid Ahmed, chairman of the Pakistan Association of Fruit and Vegetable Exporters, said 170 containers of onions should have been sent overseas on Monday. He called on the government not to impede the export of onions, which are already in ports. Wahid Ahmed noted that in case of refusal of export, the damage will amount to $ 2 million.
