From the first days of May in Ukraine, prices for white cabbage of the 2019 harvest continue to fall on May 7, 2019, at the largest wholesale market in the West of Ukraine ORUPS Shuvar, vegetables are sold at 8-10 UAH / kg (€ 0.27-0.34 / kg), which is two times cheaper than in 2018. Current prices for cabbage are the lowest for the last 3 years.
Such a drop in vegetable prices was expected. The past two years have shown a high price for this product, and the cabbage of the old harvest this year was included in the category of scarce products. These factors affected the growing interest in growing vegetables from small farmers in the South and Transcarpathia.
Even farmers who retired from business 3 years ago returned to business. Because of this, the cost of young cabbage dipped in 2019, Tatyana Getman, head of the Info-Shuvar information center, shares information.
The forecasts of Info-Shuvar experts regarding the replacement of imported vegetables with Ukrainian products turned out to be true. Today, sellers of Ukrainian markets sell cabbage mainly of local producers.
But analysts do not rule out the possibility of suspending the decline in prices for cabbage. A sudden drop in air temperature can negatively affect the ripening of cabbage, which will slow down its growth and reduce the number of offers in retail outlets throughout Ukraine.
