Finnish national agricultural production is experiencing problems in meeting demand because there are not enough producers in the country. Tomot Hakkarainen, Managing Director of Satotukku Wholesale Company, predicts a further decrease in the number of agricultural producers.
Tomi explains: “Outdoor cultivation is risky. This is hard work, and the summer here in Finland is quite short. This year there were some problems with insects that damage crops, and for a while it was unusual.
This influenced the national production of cucumbers, cauliflower and broccoli. Today, fewer people are willing to take risks, so we see that the number of manufacturers is decreasing; there will probably be a shortage in the future. ”
Similarly, Tomi comments on the functioning of greenhouses: “The number of producers who grow products in greenhouses is also decreasing, although production volumes are increasing. Technological improvements can simultaneously reduce the number of manufacturers working in greenhouses. ”
There are several large producers in the country who invest in large and best greenhouses. They can receive cheaper energy and have year-round production.
The national production of fruits and vegetables in Finland consists mainly of apples and greenhouse tomatoes. The country has to import them to meet demand. Mostly foreign products come from Poland, Spain and Italy.
Managing Director Tomi Hakkarainen says: “We are importing more and more apples from Poland, which has also begun to supply organic apples. From there we also supply salads, tomatoes and sometimes even peppers. ”
