During the holidays, the prices of greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine fell by half. Compared with last year, the cucumber also became significantly cheaper, Info-Shuvar analysts said, relying on data from its own price monitoring.
So, according to monitoring data, in the largest in Western Ukraine wholesale market of ORU “Shuvar” gherkins are sold at a price of 10-15 UAH / g (€ 0.34-0.54 / kg). Last year, cucumbers had completely different prices in the wholesale markets. At the beginning of May 2018, prices were in the range of 19-22 UAH / kg (€ 0.6-0.7 / kg).
Prices for cucumbers in Ukraine began to decline very rapidly in the last week of April. Traders could not keep prices from falling even during the pre-holiday hype. Given that throughout April the cost of cucumbers was higher than last year, the fall in prices this season looks very dramatic: over the last week of April, cucumbers fell by more than 4 times. This season, Ukraine has worsened the external balance of cucumbers. In January-March of this year, the country imported 11 times less cucumbers than it exported. Compared with last year, exports fell 3.5 times to 530 tons, while imports, on the contrary, increased by 20% to 5808 tons.
The need for an import vegetable remained in early April, but in its second half, domestic cucumber began to be increasingly offered on the country's market. Today, wholesale markets in Ukraine mainly sell locally grown cucumbers.
