Unlike farmers from other countries, Ukrainian farmers often prefer GM seeds. To date, the number of GM soy in Ukraine has reached 60%.
According to the agronomist of the Agritem company Pavel Volynets, it is impossible to control the quality of such seed material. But farmers still prefer to sow just such soybeans as their cost is lower.
According to him, growing traditional soy, during the growing season, it will not be possible to correct the mistakes that were made during the application of plant protection agents. So, herbicides must be applied over a very short period of time when the plant has no more than 2 leaves.
If you add chemicals later, this will not rectify the situation and soy will be "dirty." GM soy has no such stringent requirements; glyphosate is added at any time, which always guarantees good results.
This makes GM soybean popular among private traders who do not have their own sprayers and do not possess enough agronomic knowledge. Growing it is much easier, and it always gives a predictable and stable crop, explained Pavel Volynets.
At the same time, the AgentGreen Association informs that Ukraine should not bet on the cultivation of GM soybeans if it has a desire to develop and expand its presence in the markets of Europe and China. These countries do not consume GMO products, despite the fact that China purchases transgenic soybeans in Latin America.
