More recently, sheep husbandry in Ukraine was the main livestock industry, and the livestock amounted to almost 10 million sheep. Farmers of Western Ukraine requested the Verkhovna Rada to adopt a law that would contribute to the development of the industry in the Carpathians.
Previously, sheep farming was profitable due to rather high prices for wool. Most sheep were kept by farmers in Transcarpathia and Carpathian, where cattle cultivation was complicated by the inaccessibility of feed and pasture. Sheep graze on steep slopes where cows cannot reach.
When market conditions were established, the number of sheep in Ukraine decreased by 9 times. Now their number has stopped at around 1 million 100 thousand goals.
The development of sheep husbandry in the country is constrained by the remoteness of mountain pastures from settlements, unsatisfactory working conditions of shepherds, the difficulties of using equipment to transport manufactured products to the place of sale.
This is not to say that the state does not support the industry at all. Until 2015, assistance in the amount of up to UAH 100 per head was paid for the conservation of young animals. But in the following years this support of farmers also ceased.
Participants in the regional organizations of the Agrarian Union of Ukraine turned to the Association of Local Government "Euroregion Karpaty-Ukraine", which includes Transcarpathian, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Chernivtsi regions. By influencing the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, they hope to raise questions about the support of the industry in parliament, as well as achieve the adoption of a law on the development of sheep husbandry in the mountainous regions of the Carpathians.
